A longtime leader in healthcare improvement, we’re developing new ways to revolutionize the industry.
The Biden-Harris Administration’s strategy to strengthen health security and prepare for biothreats through collaboration with the private sector and other stakeholders is a step in the right direction. A vital component of the strategy is developing a data infrastructure that will allow early warning of disease to inform and enable effective decision-making and interventions at all levels, as recommended by Premier. We also appreciate the recognition that strong public-private partnerships are a critical component of the nation’s future preparedness strategy.
The Administration, however, is ultimately hamstrung absent corresponding and collaborating efforts and investments by Congress. As a nation, the biggest mistake we can make in the wake of the pandemic is not taking the time to reflect, learn and apply these lessons forward. Ignoring the flashing red warning lights and blaring sirens will leave us flatfooted and unprepared in the face of biological threats or other public health emergencies. Congress should seize this historic opportunity to shore up the nation’s preparedness by passing legislation to address the most glaring gaps in our preparedness capabilities. This includes strengthening the Strategic National Stockpile, modernizing the nation’s data infrastructure, incentivizing domestic manufacturing and mitigating drug and device shortages. Premier looks forward to working with both the Administration and Congress to ensure the past 2.5 years are not forgotten and that we as a nation build towards fortitude.
