Advancing Health Equity Initiative Turns Conversations into Action

Key Takeaways:
- The PINC AI™ Applied Sciences (PAS) team, Henry Ford Innovations, community stakeholders and eight life sciences organizations are collaborating to design and test solutions to advance health equity.
- These solutions will focus on strengthening a sense of connection and community, address social drivers of health, and increase and measure the delivery of equitable care.
The PINC AI™ Applied Sciences (PAS) team is partnering with Henry Ford Health, Henry Ford Innovations, community organizations, patient advocacy groups and eight life sciences organizations to work together with a shared commitment towards eliminating health inequities.
“Advancing Health Equity Through Innovation and Collaboration” was launched in Detroit, with more than 100 participants. Teams worked together to better understand the hopes and aspirations of patients along with the barriers to equitable healthcare that patients face. They also learned about what was already being done to advance health equity in Detroit and across Michigan. From these collaborative discussions, teams identified opportunities to amplify and strengthen local efforts and priorities to advance health equity.
An equity-centered, design-thinking approach provided a blueprint for building solutions and learning together.
This approach will ensure that the organizations work collaboratively to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges patients encounter and that they can move into action that is accountable to patients, families and communities. In addition, this will help maintain the momentum and collective commitment over the long term.
Key Learnings
- Health inequities are a result of how systems are designed. Healthcare must challenge existing mental models and assumptions, and work to redesign the system to advance health equity.
- Patients and communities should be at the center. Ensuring that patients and community voices are included in the development of solutions is critical. Work must be done in partnership to co-design solutions that meet patient needs and build on community strengths.
- Relationships and connections are essential. The ability to develop trust and strengthen relationships will help build and sustain our efforts in the long term.
- Build on what is working. Taking an appreciative and strengths-based approach will help us to be inspired by and collectively learn from, strengthen, amplify and scale what is working.
