Premier Engages Senate Committee on Drug Supply Chain Stability

The Senate Special Committee on Aging convened a hearing on Nov. 19, 2025 titled "Made in America: Restoring Trust in Our Medicines" to spotlight US companies that are successfully manufacturing essential generic medications domestically. The hearing underscored the vital role of American manufacturing in ensuring drug safety, creating jobs and bolstering national security. Witnesses representing the pharmaceutical industry testified, emphasizing the need for increased government support to strengthen the generic pharmaceutical supply chain. They advocated for shifting pharmaceutical ingredient production away from India and China and prioritizing product quality over cost. The witnesses also noted that while there is additional capacity for expanded manufacturing, committed volume and further capital investments are necessary to realize this potential.

Premier, along with the other traditional healthcare GPOs, was also asked to address a series of questions regarding supply chain purchasing decisions, particularly focusing on the FDA Import List, which includes products that have received exemptions despite reported quality concerns. Premier's comments to the committee also includes detailed recommendations on how Congress, the FDA, and the private sector can work together in a multi-faceted way to address drug shortages.
