Premier Responds to Congressional RFI on AI in Healthcare

Premier responded to a request for information (RFI) from Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA), cofounder of the Health Care Innovation Caucus and member of the bipartisan House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (AI), on the state of AI in healthcare. Rep. Bera issued the RFI to gather input from those with expertise and leadership in the industry to help enhance Congress’ understanding of AI in healthcare and inform efforts to develop policies that promote innovation while safeguarding patient interests. In our response, we describe:

• How Premier and our members are already leveraging AI to move the needle on cost and quality in healthcare;
• Additional opportunities for AI use cases in drug research, development and production and to streamline processes and expand patient access in clinical trials;
• The defined role that Congress could take in advancing clear statutory guidelines that will allow providers and payers to deploy AI technology to its full potential, while still protecting individual rights and safety; and
• The need for technology to work alongside and learn from healthcare professionals, but not replace the healthcare workforce.
