Premier Supports Bipartisan Legislation to Boost Medicare GME Slots
Premier joined 80 organizations in voicing support for the bipartisan Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2023 (H.R. 2389 / S. 1302), which would gradually increase the number of Medicare-supported Graduate Medical Education (GME) positions by 2,000 per year for seven years, for a total of 14,00 new slots.
Introduced by Reps. Terri Sewell (D-AL) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) in the House and Sens. Robert Mendez (D-NJ), John Boozman (R-AR), Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Susan Collins (R-ME) in the Senate, the legislation would require CMS to distribute at least 10 percent of the slots to the following categories of hospitals:
Hospitals in rural or non-contiguous areas;
Hospitals training over their GME cap;
Hospitals in states with new medical schools or new branch campuses; and
Hospitals that serve areas designated as health professional shortage areas, with priority to hospitals affiliated with historically Black medical schools.
In our recent response to the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee RFI and in our Advocacy Roadmap for the 118th Congress, Premier has called on Congress to strengthen the physician training pipeline by providing additional support to existing federal programs that support graduate medical education.
