Premier's Roundtable Yields Recommendations for Boosting Rural Value-Based Care Participation

Premier spearheaded a letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) focused on improving access and quality of healthcare for rural communities through value-based care models. The letter offers several recommendations on how CMS can further advance value-based care models in rural communities to ensure rural populations do not miss out from the opportunities offered under these models.

The recommendations stem from a roundtable discussion that Premier convened in April centered around improving rural provider participation in value-based care models. During the meeting, a broad group of healthcare and patient organizations discussed current barriers and potential opportunities for joint advocacy on policies to encourage and empower rural providers to participate in value-based care. As detailed in the letter, Premier and the other organizations encourage CMS to redefine success for rural alternative payment models to focus on quality and to avoid one-size-fits-all models. Further, the letter offers up several specific recommendations on how to address challenges to rural provider participation in recently announced models.
