Statement on CMS’ Transforming Maternal Health (TMaH) Model

By Soumi Saha, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs
Maternal health is a national health crisis in the U.S. warranting increased focus to raise the bar on quality, safety and cost of care for mothers and infants. Premier applauds today’s announcement from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on the creation of a novel model to further test, identify and scale opportunities to improve care for mothers and infants across the entire pregnancy journey including perinatal, childbirth and postpartum.
Today’s announcement builds on the important groundwork laid by the Biden-Harris Administration’s Maternal Health Call to Action and aligns with Premier’s commitment to CMS’ Maternity Care Action Plan.
Premier is focused on furthering maternal health improvement efforts, including the PINC AI™ Perinatal Improvement Collaborative (PPIC). This PPIC includes more than 220 hospital systems in all 50 states using performance improvement tools and standardized data to measure outcomes for both mothers and infants to help paint a clearer picture of what is driving deaths and harm. At its core, the PPIC is a health equity effort that strives to address the factors that impact maternal and infant health outcomes such as racial, ethnic, social and to geographic disparities as well as examine how care could be tailored to mothers with different needs.
Premier is proud to be working with the administration to measure and improve outcomes for both mothers and infants and believes this new care model will add the essential funding and support needed to help build on those learnings.
