A longtime leader in healthcare improvement, we’re developing new ways to revolutionize the industry.
Drug shortages impact every segment of the healthcare ecosystem threatening patient safety and contributing half a billion dollars in increased healthcare expenditures annually. While Premier has made significant and lasting progress with market solutions to drug shortages, policy changes are needed. This is because shortages persist for a variety of complex reasons, and no one-size-fits-all strategy will fix the problem. This is why Premier strongly supports the Mitigating Emergency Drug Shortages (MEDS) Act (S. 2723), introduced today by Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Tina Smith (D-MN).
The MEDS Act builds upon the prior work of Congress to provide additional authority to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help mitigate drug shortages and develop market-based incentives to help ensure a stable supply of medications critical for patient care. The MEDS Act is a thoughtful, holistic and sustainable approach to eliminating drugs shortages. The foresight and thought leadership by Senator Collins and Senator Smith in developing a bill that proactively addresses many of the challenges that FDA identifies as requiring solutions is a true testament to their understanding of the dynamics and root causes of shortages.
